I went to see John Wick 4 at the cinema on Friday the 31st of March, and I loved it! It perfectly continued on from John Wick 3, and yet felt so original that it could be a stand alone film. It was a great way to end the series, and here’s why.
Characters:
I would say that there was a perfect balance between the use of new characters and the use of characters that we have seen before. We got to see our favourite characters, such as, the Bowery King, Winston, Charon and, of course, John Wick, all return to the big screen once again. But, we also got a group of new and refreshing characters, such as Tracker, Shimazu, Caine and the franchises newest antagonist, Marquis Vincent. One part that I loved about the new characters was the teaming up of Tracker, Caine and John Wick, for the staircase scene toward the end of the film. I really felt like they all complimented each others characters and attributes really well, especially after fighting for most of the film. I would have loved to have seen more of the Bowery King however as I felt that he was a very powerful character in the series. Hopefully Lionsgate will make a spinoff film or series based of his origins, because I would love to see more of him! I wasn’t sure how to feel about Caine however, as although I loved his character and his backstory, I felt like, compared to the rest of the series, his character was a little too far fetched. I think they made his abilities too powerful, after all, no matter how much practice a blind person has, they cannot shoot someone who is 30ft away from them. I however feel that all of the other characters were great and were perfectly casted. If I could change one thing about the characters it would be to bring back John Wick’s Dog one last time, possibly even have him fight with Trackers dog…
Cinematography:
I think that we can all agree that the cinematography for this film was second to none. The birds-eye-view fight scene where John Wick and Tracker were fighting in the building, and with John Wicks new gun which fired sparks, it was one of the best pieces of camera work that I have scene for a long time as well as the fight scene where John Wick kills Killa in the club underneath the waterfall. For the rest of the film the cinematography kept a high standard, just nothing else special.
Script:
Obviously there isn’t much to talk about here as the main character himself only said 380 words, throughout the entire film! However, the script was well suited to the film, and I think that it perfectly captured all of the characters emotions exceptionally.
Soundtrack:
Again, not much to talk about here as the film mostly consisted of fight scenes, which were dead silent, apart from grunts, stabs and gunshots. However, in this instance, I personally would have liked to have seen some rock music here and there and some emotional music when he died at the end.
Plot:
I think that the plot was perfect and I don’t think that there was a better way to end the series. I would change two things however. One being that John Wicks dog is in it, even if it is only for a few scenes. And two, I think that it would have been nice if at the end when John Wick was staring at the sunset, maybe he saw his wife? Or a sad scene where it shows that he is finally at peace, instead of just cutting straight from him dying to him being in a grave.
Overall and Ratings:
Overall I think that it is definitely the best film so far this year, and if you haven’t seen it yet, and you’re a fan of the franchise, I would definitely urge you to go an watch it. For scores I would give it an:
Score: 87% | 9/10
Rest In Peace Lance Reddick.
